C-SPAN ( C able -S atellite P ublic A ffairs N etwork ) is an American television station , which reports exclusively on legislation, government and constitutional justice in the United States. The station began broadcasting on March 19, 1979.

The parliamentary television program includes a. the live coverage from the US Congress and the broadcast of official statements and press conferences of the US government as well as interviews on political topics.

A second channel with the same principle has been offered under the name C-SPAN2 since 1986. It broadcasts the latest book discussions under the name Booknotes , the US Senate sessions, and other special events.

The less popular C-SPAN3 broadcasts other current and historical programs on weekdays.

Live streams of all three television programs are available on the Internet. There is also the C-SPAN radio in the Washington-Baltimore region (WCSP-FM 90.1 MHz). In Germany, all three C-SPAN programs could also be received via the peer-to-peer service Livestation until it was closed in March 2017. The broadcaster makes its entire video archive available to the public free of charge via the C-SPAN Video Library website.

C-SPAN is managed by the non-profit organization National Cable Satellite Corporation and is a foundation of American cable network companies. It is run privately but not commercially . The television station is financed solely from fees paid by the cable network operators who broadcast C-SPAN. The television program has been broadcast around the clock since 1982 .

In March 1979, C-SPAN reached 3.5 million subscribers, today C-SPAN reaches 100 million people via satellite and cable TV.
