Padrão de Stº Agostinho by Diogo Cão at Cape Santa Maria

The Cabo de Santa Maria ( Portuguese for Cape Santa Maria or Cape of Saint Mary ) is a cape in Angola . It is located north of Moçâmedes on the Atlantic coast of Angola.

In 1482 the Portuguese navigator Diogo Cão came to Cape Santa Maria in search of the southernmost point of the African continent. It was baptized as Cabo do Lobo ( Wolf's Cape ).

With the intention of claiming Portuguese sovereignty, Diogo Cão had a pillar ( padrão ) built.

Padrão

The Padrão seated there carries the following text according to Abel Fontoura da Costa (with free German translation):

Na era da criação do mundo de 6681 anos, e do nascimento de Nosso Senhor Jesus de 1482 anos, o mui alio, mui excelente e poderoso principe, el-rel D. João II, de Portugal, mandou descobrir esta terra e põr estes padrões by Diogo Cão, escudeiro de sua caso.

In 6681 after the creation of the world and 1482 after the birth of our Lord Jesus, the highest, most excellent and powerful King John II of Portugal had this land discovered and this pillar was set by Diogo Cão, squire of his court.
