The Cabrillo National Monument in the US state of California was built in honor of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo , who landed on September 28, 1542 as the first European on the west coast of North America. The monument was granted National Monument status in 1913 . On October 15, 1966, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District .
In 1939, the sculptor Alvaro de Bree made a statue of Cabrillo on behalf of the Portuguese government, which donated the statue to the United States. The statue is over four meters high and weighs about seven tons.
Every October the Cabrillo Festival takes place, which repeats the landing at Ballast Point in San Diego Bay.
From the park you can see the harbor and the skyline of San Diego and Coronado .
On the highest elevation of the park is the Old Point Loma Light Station , a symbol of San Diego since 1855. Gray whales can be observed from the lighthouse in winter .
