Cacti is a free web application with which measured values can be collected periodically and displayed graphically. It is mainly used to monitor the utilization of various network components or other IT systems within a local network, but can basically monitor any device that can be accessed via IP. In principle, it is also possible to display environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and much more. It is available under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
System requirements
Cacti requires the following software:
- PHP
- Web server
- MySQL as a database (currently no other databases are supported)
- RRDtool
- SNMP , e.g. B. net-snmp for network monitoring
functionality
Cacti is a user interface for RRD . All the data required for the graphical representation are queried from the sources at regular intervals and the data obtained in this way are stored in RRD archives, processed by Cacti and converted into graphs using the RRDtool and displayed in the web application. The data is collected either via shell scripts , Perl programs etc. or via SNMP queries.
Cacti is characterized by the fact that the setup and configuration of the data sources as well as the visualization are consistently defined and organized via the web interface. There is also a nested system of prepared, modifiable and parameterizable methods and templates with which the components to be monitored can be flexibly set up and configured in Cacti. These configurations are stored internally in a MySQL database.
The Cacti user administration allows authorization based on different objects, e.g. B. per individual graph. Integration under an LDAP directory, including Active Directory , is optionally possible.
Extensions
In addition to organizing various data sources, Cacti offers the option of integrating your own or pre-made extensions . This allows the functionality of Cacti to be increased:
- Alerting, Thresholds: THOLD plug-in
- Maps: Plugin Weathermap
- Realtime Performance: Plugin Realtime
