Cadaver (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cadaver is an isometric adventure game developed by the Bitmap Brothers . It appeared in 1990 for the Amiga and Atari ST and was then ported to the PC and Acorn Archimedes .

Course of the game

In Cadaver, the player takes on the role of the dwarf Karadoc, who sets out to Wulf Castle to find riches. The game begins when Karadoc arrives in a boat through the sewer system in the basement of the castle. From then on you control the figure using an 8-way joystick control and context-sensitive menus through a total of five levels - from the dungeons to the guard rooms and royal apartments up to the towers, where you finally face the final boss Diana.

A large part of the gameplay involves solving various puzzles. They include solving logical tasks, collecting and combining countless objects that have to be used in a suitable place, as well as operating levers / switches / floor plates and the like. Often spells have to be used and, occasionally, monsters have to be fought.

The order in which the puzzles are solved is only roughly given. You can usually enter many rooms at the beginning of a level and may return to the same room several times because something has changed there or because you have new items that can be used there. Also, there are often several ways to solve a puzzle. For example, if you can't figure out how to make a particular monster disappear, you can just kill it with stones. Or in some places you can simply collect all sorts of objects in the level and use them to build towers, from which you can then, for example, jump over a gate to which you have not found the right key.

Extensions

There is an expansion Cadaver: The Payoff , the plot of which follows directly from the end of Cadaver and which contains four additional levels.

There are also three other individual levels, Temple , Gatehouse and The Last Supper . The first two appeared as demos in front of Cadaver; the last one was on a cover disc of UK Zero magazine.

criticism

The game received very good reviews and was technically and graphically up-to-date for its time. For example, the Computer and Video Games magazine declared in issue 107 a “C + VG HIT” when it was published. The Amiga version received the “CU Screen Star” from CU Amiga Magazine and was an “Amiga Joker Hit” in the Amiga Joker . In addition to the content of the game, particular emphasis was placed on the detailed isometric graphics and the technical implementation of the 3D rooms, comparable to the "filmation" technique of earlier Ultimate games (such as Knight Lore). The Amiga Joker, for example, certified that the game had set “new standards for isometric action adventures”.
