The Cadman's Cottage is the oldest remaining building from the colonial period that the district The Rocks (rock) in Sydney , Australia , was built.

history

Was built Cadman's Cottage from 1815 to 1816; it served as a residential building for the colonial inspections of the helmsman commissioned by the colonial government and his crews. The design can probably be attributed to Francis Greenway , the most important architect of Sydney's early colonial times. The building is of great historical significance for Sydney, especially because it was the first massive building that was built on the coastline of Sydney in what is now The Rocks . It is reported that originally the tidal range reached up to 2.4 m from Cadmans Cottage, but due to the land grabbing of the buildings of Circular Quay, the water has receded to a distance of about 100 m from 1816 until today. The building served four helmsmen from 1816 to 1845, served as the headquarters of the Sydney Water Police from 1845 to 1864, and as accommodation for seafarers from 1865 to 1970.

Restoration of Cadmans Cottage began in 1972 after it was declared a listed monument under the National Parks and Wildlife Act and placed under the control of the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority . After an archaeological study in preparation for the 200th anniversary of Australia in 1988, only minor work was carried out to complete the building. The building is now used as an information center by Sydney Harbor National Park .

John Cadman

The building was named after John Cadman, who was born in 1772 and was transported to Australia as a convict at the age of 25 for stealing a horse. In 1821 he was pardoned by Governor Lachlan Macquarie . He lived with his wife and two step-daughters as a boat inspector from 1827 until he left in 1845. He stayed in the house for 18 years, which was the longest time in that position.

meaning

Cadmans Cottage is accorded national importance by the Australian people as the discovery of Sydney Cove's original coastline demonstrates the evolution of the ship's quay and Sydney itself. It is the third oldest building in Sydney and a rare and early example of an official colonial building, a residential building. This is true even though the restoration of this residential building in 1972 lost the original substance.

location

The cottage is located on George Street (number 110) in close proximity to the overseas passenger terminal. It can be entered and viewed by the public from Monday to Friday.
