The Café Bonorand was an establishment in the Leipzig Rosental used as a café , pastry shop and concert hall .

After a promenade to Gohlis was laid out from the Leipzig Rosentaltor along the Pleiße through the Rosental in 1777 , a Leipzig confectioner opened a sales stand at this in 1782, primarily for ice cream. On old maps, this facility is shown as an ice cream shop, popularly known as "Zur kalten Madame".

The Swiss confectioner Otto Bonorand (1821–1885) had a café built here in 1841, although the little Schweizerhäuschen, built in 1824, was not far from there . It worked out and the house could soon be expanded. In contrast to the Schweizerhäuschen, a large hall also enabled large festive events. Concerts were held both indoors and outdoors. Brockhaus Konversationslexikon spoke of the "Rose Valley with the Bonorand Concert Garden".

In the Leipzig City History Museum you can find invitations and program notes for the following events in the Bonorand, which indicate the wide range of guests in the house:

  • Summer festival of the Arion Academic Choral Society , 1893
  • Brocken Festival of the Academia Association, 1895
  • 20th Foundation Festival of the Academia Leipzig Association, 1895
  • Feast for the change of rector in 1900

Even after a change of ownership, the establishment kept the name Bonorand. In the 1920s, the Leipzig Zoo expanded to the west and occupied the path to Gohlis. According to the Leipzig Lexicon, the Bonorand was operated until 1935. Now in its place in the zoo is the area of the Przewalski horses and the animal kindergarten.
