The Café Merkur in Leipzig was a reading café in the style of the Viennese coffee house on the western edge of the city center (Dittrichring 5).

history

In 1877 the Café Carola was opened in the street An der Pleiße (today Dittrichring ) opposite the Thomaskirche and next to the entrance to the residential complex Lurgenstein's garden , which changed its name to Merkur after five years . The owner was called Richard Keil.

A display of over 300 newspapers and magazines as well as almost 300 address books were available.

The café was a popular place to stay for Leipzig artists. The guests included the painters Rüdiger Berlit and Max Schwimmer , the writers Erich Kästner , Hans Reimann and Joachim Ringelnatz as well as the theater people Eugen Ortner and Lina Carstens .

Café Merkur was destroyed in the air raid on Leipzig on December 4, 1943 . The site lay fallow until the beginning of the 1990s. In 1995/1996 it was incorporated into the forecourt of the administration building of Dresdner Bank (now Commerzbank ).
