The Café Zeman (Czech: Zemanova kavárna ) in Brno is a work of the famous Czech architect Bohuslav Fuchs (1895-1972) and an early example of functionalist modernity .

Origin and demolition

In 1925, Fuchs was commissioned to build a café in the park on Na Kolišti Street , on the site of the former Schopp café pavilion. In 1926 the Café Zeman was built and opened. It was one of the first functionalist-style buildings in Czechoslovakia .

The construction of the new Janáček Theater in 1964 necessitated the demolition of the café.

reconstruction

In 1991 consideration was given to rebuilding this architecturally significant building. The Brno city administration supported the project. Construction began in 1994. On March 24, 1995, on the hundredth anniversary of Bohuslav Fuchs' birthday, the coffee house was ceremoniously opened. The public was able to visit the café for the first time on April 15, 1995.
