Cahir Abbey (also Cahir Priory , Irish Mainistir na Cathrach ) is a former Augustinian canon in the village of the same name in County Tipperary in Ireland .

history

The monastery was founded in the 13th century during the reign of King John by the Norman knight Geoffrey de Camville († around 1219) as the "Abbey of Our Lady".

The Augustinian community in Cahir existed for 400 years. The last prior of the priory was Edward Lonergan. The ruins of the choir with Gothic tracery windows and the tower are still preserved today . The nave and the remaining priory buildings of St. Mary were destroyed. The priory on what is now Abbey Street was never an abbey, this name only comes from the local vernacular.
