CalculiX is a free , under the GPL standing finite element program . It is being developed by Guido Dhondt and Klaus Wittig, both employees of MTU Aero Engines , for three-dimensional structural calculations. It uses the Abaqus input format for the equation solver. Therefore, numerous preprocessors and postprocessors can be used. For numerical flow simulations, CalculiX works with the free CFD programs duns , ISAAC and OpenFOAM . Also with the commercial FEM programs Nastran andAnsys , the free FEM program Code Aster and the cloud-based platform SimScale can work together with CalculiX.

In the university environment, CalculiX is used, for example, by the "FAM - Department of Applied Mechanics" at Paderborn University .

In addition to use in Linux or other Unix versions such as MacOSX, Windows installations are also available. The Linux subsystem (WSL) is now added to the previous ones in Windows 10 from version 1709. A Linux such as Ubuntu or Suse is installed and, together with an X server for Windows, thousands of Linux programs such as Calculix can now also be used more directly with windows in Windows 10 without virtual machines.

The parametric open source CAD program FreeCAD uses CalculiX as the standard solver in its FEM module.
