The reserve Caledon Nature Reserve is located 120 kilometers southeast of Bloemfontein on the road R701 between Wepener and Smithfield in the Free State Province in South Africa . It is 2,300 hectares in size.

This nature reserve should not be confused with the Caledon Nature Reserve (Western Cape) in the Western Cape of the same name .

It is named after the nearby Caledon River , which is dammed at the Welbedacht dam . This dam supplies Bloemfontein with water, the nature reserve is located on the western bank of the reservoir.

In addition to the wide variety of birds (over 200 species, most of which waterfowl) the home NSG also wildebeest , Blesbok , Springbok and Zebra .

Two floating bush camps on rafts offer overnight accommodation for hikers and canoeists. On the shore there is a lapa with barbecue facilities for self-catering . Fishing is the main attraction here, with barbels, yellowfish and carp in the river and dam.
