California Proposition 64 (2016)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The California Proposition 64 (also known as Adult Use of Marijuana Act was formally the "Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act"), a 2016 in California standing for voting referendum on the general legalization of cannabis as an intoxicant . With this legalization of cannabis for consumption as a stimulant , the legislative proposal went one step further than California Proposition 215 , passed in 1996 , which exempted the use of cannabis for medical purposes in California. The referendum was passed with 57% of the vote and the Adult Use of Marijuana Act was passed into law on November 9, 2016.

The initiative was supported, among other things, by the editorial staff of the Los Angeles Times , which had rejected a similar bill under the title California Proposition 19 in 2010. In its justification, the newspaper editors pointed to the fact that a total of four US states have now legalized cannabis as an intoxicant and that citizens' attitudes towards prosecuting the consumption of cannabis for pleasure purposes have changed fundamentally since then. Prominent supporters of Proposition 64 included politicians Bernie Sanders and Gary E. Johnson , the Libertarian Party's presidential candidate in the 2016 election year.
