The Holywell Music Room is a music hall in Oxford , England .

Location and architecture

The Holywell Music Room was built in 1748 based on the models in London. The design was created by Thomas Caplin , Vice Principal of Oxford College St Edmund Hall . It is located on the grounds of Wadham College on Holywell Street, Oxford.

The audience sits in the U-shaped music hall with a view of the podium, behind which an ancient organ has been moved for several years.

The building has been a listed building since 1954 and is listed in the list of monuments as building grade II * .

history

The weekly concerts introduced by the composer William Hayes have been held in the music hall since 1748 . Over time, the Holywell Music Room has also been a performance venue for musicians such as Joseph Haydn and Georg Friedrich Handel , and since 2002 for the Oxford Lieder Festival .
