Callirius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Callirius was a Celtic god worshiped in Britain . From Colchester (County Essex ), the former Camulodunum , an inscription has been preserved in his honor:

" DEO SILVANO CALLIRIO D CINTVSMVS AERARIVS VSLM "

"For the god Silvanus Callirius, Decimus Cintusmus, coppersmith, willingly fulfilled and deserved his vow."

In a poem about the god Cernunnos , Callirus is mentioned:

Cernunnos
Horned, seated man
God of the forest
You are Callirus under the trees
You are the man of Nemetona .

The name Callirius is associated with the Irish coll [ koːɬ ] ("hazelnut") and the Welsh celli [ 'keɬi ] ("forest"). The identification according to the Interpretatio Romana with the Roman god Silvanus also shows that Callirus was a god of trees and forests.
