Calne Railway

The Calne Railway was a railway company based in Wiltshire , England .

The company received on May 15, 1860 the right to build an 8.5 kilometer long railway line from Chippenham to Calne . The company had a share capital of £ 35,000. The main shareholders were the Harris family, who owned a large meat processing plant in Calne. The 2.14 meter wide gauge line was connected to the Great Western Railway network in Chippenham . Commissioning took place on November 3, 1863. The GWR had already agreed to operate the facility in May 1862.

With the help of the Great Western Railway, the railway line was switched to standard gauge on July 21, 1873 . The takeover by GWR took place on July 1, 1892.
