Calow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The calow was a Polish measure with a double meaning. Once it was a measure of length and corresponded to an inch , the other time it was a measure of area. The measure applied in Poland and in the Free State of Krakow . In Poland this measure was established by a law of June 15, 1818. Validity can be assumed until the introduction of Russian dimensions on May 1, 1849. Already on October 11, 1835 and July 6, 1844, a ukase stipulated this introduction to January 1, 1845.

  • generally 1 calow = 1/12 stopa / foot = 1/24 lokic / cubit
  • generally 1 calow = 12 linii = 24 millimetrow / millimeter
  • Warsaw 1 Calow = 10 4/5 Paris lines = 0.0243 meters
  • Free State of Krakow 1 Calow = 12 1/6 Parisian lines = 0.0273 meters

Area measure

Instead of a square calow, the area was always referred to as a square calow in the past.
