The Cambrai-Fritsch-Kaserne was a location of the US Army in Darmstadt .

history

1937/38 the built Wehrmacht two barracks for the stationed in Darmstadt Artillery Regiment 33 of 33 Infantry Division . These were named after the Battle of Cambrai and the former Commander in Chief of the Army Werner von Fritsch .

After the end of the Second World War, the barracks were taken over by the American military in 1950 and merged. In particular, during the Cold War , the US Army stationed support units and units that dealt with the operation of short- and medium-range missiles such as the Nike Ajax stationed at the August Euler airfield . A unit of the US Air Force also used part of the barracks for a few years.

After the end of the Cold War, in addition to the support units, military intelligence services in particular found quarters there. In the early 2000s, Darmstadt hit the headlines for deploying the Echelon system.

In 2006 the closure of all military facilities of the US Army in Darmstadt was announced for cost reasons. In September 2008 the US Army Garrison Darmstadt was officially disbanded and deactivated. The site has been fallow ever since. The current owner is the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks . The facility is to be upgraded with residential development in the next few years.
