The Cambridge Optical Aperture Synthesis Telescope (COAST) is an astronomical interferometer at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory in Cambridgeshire , England . It consists of five Cassegrain telescopes , each with a mirror diameter of 40 cm, which can be aligned using siderostats and which, separated by a base length of up to 100 m, can achieve angular resolutions of up to 0.001 arc seconds . With COAST it was possible for the first time to take high-resolution images of star surfaces.
