Campanus is an impact crater in the southwest of the front of the moon between Mare Nubium and Palus Epidemiarum , southeast of the crater Hippalus and immediately northwest of Mercator . The somewhat irregularly shaped crater rim is little eroded and is terraced towards the largely flat interior.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Italian mathematician and astronomer Campanus von Novara .
