Campo de Mayo is a military base in Partido San Miguel in Argentina , about 30 km northwest of Buenos Aires . The base is one of the most important in the country, has an area of 80 km² and is the seat of the Escuela General Lemos , an officer school of the Argentine army .

history

The construction of the base was decided on August 8, 1901 by a law initiated by the Minister of War, General Pablo Riccheri .

Between 1976 and 1982, during the Dirty War , four secret torture centers were located on the base: "La Casita", "Prisión Militar de Encausados", "El Campito" and the "Hospital Militar," where newborn babies were taken from their imprisoned mothers to be placed in other families.

Campo de Mayo was also the site of a mutiny in April 1987 , led by the military Aldo Rico and carried out by so-called Carapintadas (German: painted faces, because of the paint they used for camouflage). The incident was an attempted coup by military forces against President Raúl Alfonsín , despite the passage of the Ley de Punto Final on December 24, 1986, which left indictments of Dirty War crimes limited in time. As one of the consequences, the Law on Obedience was passed, which severely restricted the prosecution of lower-ranking military officials.
