Camus is the fifth largest cognac - distilleries based in Cognac in France . The company is still family-owned as the only major cognac producer.

history

The founder of the company was Jean-Baptiste Camus (1835–1901) who - as an independent winemaker - decided in 1863 to no longer sell the brandy he distilled to the existing cognac houses, but to market it himself in the future . For this purpose he founded his company, which should also focus on quality assurance and improvement, under the name La Grande Marque . The main export country was England, where the brand quickly gained a good reputation.

The sons Edmond (1859-1933) and Gaston (1865-1945) joined the father's company in 1894 and 1896, respectively. During this time, the sale of cognac changed from a barrel to a bottle product. In Russia, the Camus cognac brand became the purveyor to the court of the last royal family.

The third generation is represented by Michel Camus (1911–1985). He renewed business relations with Russia - under different political conditions - and in the 1960s was one of the first to recognize the business potential of the emerging duty-free markets.

The current company owners are in the fourth generation Jean-Paul Camus (* 1945) and the fifth generation Cyril Camus (* 1971), who recognized and expanded the possibilities of the Asian business early on. Cyril Camus also developed a cognac series from wines from the Île de Ré and expanded the product range with a coffee series .

Château du Plessis

The Château du Plessis is the ancestral home of the Camus family. It is located in the north of the city of Cognac in the so-called borderies and is now partially used as a restaurant. A small part of the Camus cognac reserve is stored in the vaulted cellars.
