Can Saragossa
Can Saragossa or Can Xardó is a listed building in Lloret de Mar and is now used as a museum.
history
A farm has been mentioned on the site of the current building since 1317. In 1885 the doctor Narcís Saragossa Ametller inherited the house and carried out extensive renovations between 1874 and 1902. In 1902 it was converted to its current appearance. Narcís Saragossa Ametller, who died in 1908, commissioned the builder Joan Lluhí Rissech with the renovation in the style of the neo-Gothic trend of modernist architecture. In 1954 the house was converted into a hotel called Tomorrow . Its use as a hotel ended in the 1960s. In 1984 the city administration bought the house. Today a museum is housed in the house.
Building description
The building on the road from Tossa de Mar to Lloret is on a small hill next to the municipal theater. It was built in 1902 in a neo-Gothic style. On an almost square floor plan of 16.5 × 17 m² and a floor area of 290 m², three floors rise.
museum
The museum has a permanent exhibition on the ground floor about the archaeological finds from the Iberian era . On the second floor there are drawings and oil paintings by the artist Joan Llaverias i Labró (* 1865 in Vilanova i la Geltrú , † 1938 in Lloret). He had first visited Lloret in 1905 and had chosen his summer residence here every year since 1914. In 1952 a street in Lloret was named after him and in 1983 the city acquired 152 of his drawings and later some oil paintings, including the 1921 work "The Procession of Saint Cristina", which is considered one of the artist's most important works. These works were exhibited in the Vedaquer Cultural Center from 1987 and after its conversion to the Museu del Mar in Can Saragossa.
