CF-18A Hornet based in Bagotville

Canadian Forces Base Bagotville (IATA: YBG, ICAO: CYBG), (short: CFB Bagotville), is a Canadian air force base about ten kilometers west of the city of Saguenay in the province of Quebec . This is one of two air force bases in Canada on which CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft are permanently stationed. The airfield is operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force . The headquarters of the 3rd Wing are stationed at the base.

The airfield also serves as a civil airport. It has been classified as an airport of entry by NAV CANADA and therefore officials from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are stationed here. The airport can also be approached by smaller civil aircraft.

history

At the height of World War II , the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) looked for areas that were close to water and relatively uninhabited. There were several airfields that the armed forces used. The Royal Canadian Air Force chose the location because it was largely isolated, very easy to reach by water and had a rail link. On February 1, the branches of the Royal Canadian Navy, Army and Air Force were merged. This led to the renaming of the base in CFB Bagotville.

Towards the end of 1968 the 410 Squadron was set up, which carried out flight training for the armed forces. In September 1969 the 433 "Porc-Épic" Squadron was set up to fly the CF-116 Freedom Fighter . In 1982 the 410 Squadron was relocated to CFB Cold Lake , which replaced the 434 "Bluenose" Squadron there.

On July 1, 1984, the 425 Squadron received the first CF-188 Hornet fighter aircraft to replace the CF-101 Voodoo. On July 9, 1985, the 434 Squadron was relocated to CFB Chatham . In 1986 the squadron was restructured and reactivated and in 1988 it was fully equipped with CF-188 hornet fighter aircraft.

On April 1, 1993, CFB Bagotville became the headquarters of the 3rd Wing and was responsible for all units stationed at the airfield. On the same day the "Tiger" Squadron was reformed and received new aircraft including helicopters of the type CH-146 Griffons.

In July 1996, the units stationed on the base supported the civil rescue units in the event of flooding. On March 1, 1999, the 12th Radar Squadron was set up on CFB Bagotville, which took over the tactical control tasks of the combat aircraft. This system replaces the old system on the RCAF station Mont Apica , which was closed.

Current usage

Today more than 40 CF-18 Hornet fighter jets and helicopters as well as the following squadrons are stationed at CFB Bagotville:

  • 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron ( CF-18 Hornet )
  • 433 Tactical Fighter Squadron (CF-18 Hornet)
  • 439 Combat Support Squadron (search and rescue)
  • 3rd Air Maintenance Squadron
  • 12 Radar Squadron
  • 10 Field Technical Training Squadron ( CFB Cold Lake detachment)

The 414 Electronic Warfare Support Squadron, which has been stationed there since January 2009, is also located on Bagotville. The Squadron is headquartered in Ottawa and is equipped with military electronic warfare officers who fly on commercial aircraft.

The Bagotville Air Cadet Summer Training takes place at CFB Bagotville . Air Force cadets come from across the country to attend various courses such as: B. to participate in the two-week basic course up to the six-week survival instructors course.

Other aircraft stationed at the airfield are the Alpha Jets, which are used for the Canadian Forces Jet Training Program.

The airport is served by the civil airlines Jazz Air , CanJet , Pascan Aviation and Sunwing Airlines with smaller planes .
