Canal des Pangalanes

The Canal des Pangalanes , a continuous 645 km long waterway and runs parallel to the Indian Ocean on the east side of the island of Madagascar from Toamasina (Tamatave) to Farafangana .

During the colonial period, artificial connections between the naturally formed lagoons were created over a period of eight years . The canal is the region's lifeline because there is no road. It meanders through a dune landscape and is heavily silted up in some places. The headland between the canal and the ocean is only 100 m wide in places.
