Canan Gerede (* 1948 in New York City ) is a Turkish film director and screenwriter .

Gerede first studied theater improvisation, first in Caracas, Venezuela, and later at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. She then switched to documentary film .

Her first work was for Turkish television in 1977. From 1978 to 1982 she worked with Yılmaz Güney as an assistant on the project “Yol - The Way”. She wrote the screenplay for the German film Germany under Thorns in 1983 and was co-producer for Thomas Harlan 's Wundkanal that same year . She then made several documentaries such as "Pass the bludwurst please" (1987), "Abidine, can you paint paintness" (1988) and "Women in Pakistan" (1993).

For the film "Love Colder Than Death" (1995) she received the award for best film at the 6th Cologne Film Festival.

Canan Gerede is the mother of Bennu Gerede (* 1973).
