Cape Lookout (German also Cape Lookout ) is the southernmost point of the Outer Banks , a chain of islands off the east coast of the state of North Carolina in the United States of America . The low, sandy chain of islands to which the Cape belongs lies between the Atlantic and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway . The cape denotes the western end of Onslow Bay and the eastern end of Raleigh Bay .

Cape Lookout Lighthouse

The cape is located in Carteret County , about 18 kilometers southeast of the small town of Beaufort .

Parts of the Outer Banks that border the Cape are part of a national nature reserve, the Cape Lookout National Seashore .

The historic Cape Lookout Lighthouse is located near the cape . It is painted with diamonds instead of the usual striped pattern and is the only lighthouse on the American east coast that also operates during the day.
