Cape Lookout National Seashore
Cape Lookout National Seashore is a national seashore- type nature reserve established to protect a 90-kilometer stretch of coastline of the southern Outer Banks between the inlets of Ocracoke Inlet in the northeast and Beaufort Inlet in the southeast of the island chain in the state of North Carolina . The section is formed by three of the barrier islands North Core Banks , South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks . Two historic villages on Core Banks, the wild horses ( bank ponies ) on Shackleford Island and the Cape Lookout lighthouse painted with black and white diamonds are also part of the reserve. The associated visitor and information center is located on Harkers Island .
The National Park Service , which oversees the stretch of coast, plans to renovate the lighthouse, which was first lit on November 15, 1859, and restore the historic districts of Cape Lookout and Portsmouth Village Historic Sites as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations in 2016 .
Management of the park
The National Seashore was authorized on March 10, 1966 and declared a North Carolina Heritage Area on May 23, 1986. Since June 16, 1986, the area has also been part of the Carolinian-South Atlantic Biosphere Reserve , the biosphere reserve of the Carolinas and the South Atlantic. On September 9, 2007, tropical storm Gabrielle hit land exactly at Cape Lookout National Seashore with winds of over 90 kilometers per hour. The damage was minor, but the ensuing flood and coastal erosion clearly affected the area.
