history

In the 12th century, the Knights Templar owned the land of today's Capelrig House. Later they passed to the Order of Malta . There may have been a chapel on the hill at that time. Since a derivation of the word Capelrig that has been discussed is the place name “Chapel Ridge” (“Kapellenhöhe”), this would result in a consistent picture. In 1563 the lands became the property of the Scottish Crown and then to the Torphichen family . The Caldwell family later acquired the land and finally, in 1765, the Scottish theologian Robert Barclay . Undoubtedly, an unspecified building already existed at this point, which Barclay had completely removed and today's Capelrig House built in 1769. It remained in the family for a long time. In 1962 it was transformed into an arts center. Since 2004, the East Renfrewshire Council has been using Capelrig House. Eastwood High School was built on the land .

Today the building is no longer in its original state. The southern of the one-story wing was raised in 1913, so that the symmetry of Capelrig House was broken. The semicircular staircase at the back of the building is also more recent.
