Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (Eng. " Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy ") is a song by the British singer and composer Elton John , the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin .

The album "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" was realized as a concept album and takes up John and Taupin's life in London from 1967 to 1970 in chronological order and with an autobiographical intention. "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" is the first of ten songs. The conceptual plot continues with the title Tower of Babel .

background

The album's opening song introduces Elton John as Captain Fantastic and Bernie Taupin as Brown Dirt Cowboy, sometimes referred to as the Kid. As a sheltered Reggie Dwight growing up, John was far from being a hero (“Captain Fantastic raised and regimented, hardly a hero”) and more typically English (“Two teas both with sugar please”), but at least used to city life (“ City slick captain ").

Taupin, on the other hand, who grew up in the country and turned brown in the saddle (“While little Dirt Cowboys turned brown in their saddles”), felt unsure whether it was the right decision for him to leave home (“Should I make my way out of my home in the woods "). But the temptation of what could be achievable was greater (“The honey the hive could be holding”).

To go his own way, John left his previous band Bluesology ("Too hot for he band with a desperate desire for change"). Again and again he and Taupin tried unsuccessfully ("We've thrown in the towel too many times") to conquer the world as Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy ("From the end of the world to your town" ).

But at least they got off to a start in their work together (“Hand in hand went music and the rhyme”), even if it was to be a long and lonely climb (“It's a long and lonely climb”).
