Welsberg is a district of the Upper Franconian municipality of Itzgrund in the Coburg district .

geography

Welsberg is located about twelve kilometers southwest of Coburg on a ridge between the Rodachtal valley to the west and Itzgrund to the east . The county road CO 5 runs through the village from Rossach to Schottenstein . About 1.8 kilometers west lies the wilderness Sorghof , a former forester.

history

Welsberg was mentioned in a document in 1496 when the brothers Kraft and Pangratz von Lichtenstein with Jeronimus von Lichtenstein and others took the tithe of Welßberg from the Würzburg bishop as a fief. The place belonged to the parish of the original parish Pfarrweisach . In 1452 the village was assigned to the newly raised parish of Watzendorf . At the end of the 18th century, one part of Welsberg was subject to the Würzburg monastery , the other part belonged to the Gereuth manor of Greiffenclau . Welsberg was right on the border between the Hochstift and the Principality of Saxony-Coburg . The von Lichtenstein were among the predecessors of Greiffenclaus. At times there was a noble residence in Welsberg, which Ernst Wilhelm von Lichtenstein zu Schottenstein lived in.

In 1848 the hamlets of Büdenhof , first mentioned in the 12th century, and Sorghof, first mentioned in the 16th century, were incorporated. In 1910 the community built a school house, and in 1911 the village was badly damaged by a fire.

In 1925 the village had 148 inhabitants and 29 houses. 167 people lived in the community, consisting of Welsberg, Büdenhof and Sorghof, of whom 157 belonged to the parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schottenstein. In 1987 the village had 150 inhabitants and 33 houses with 38 apartments.

On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved. Since then, Welsberg has been part of the Coburg district . In the course of the Bavarian territorial reform , Welsberg lost its independence as a municipality on May 1, 1978 and, like its districts, the deserted Büdenhof and Sorghof, became part of the municipality of Itzgrund.
