Herreth is a district of the Upper Franconian community Itzgrund in the district of Coburg .

geography

Herreth is located about 15 kilometers south of Coburg between the Itz and the Main in the Banzgau, at the foot of the 455 meter high Eierberge. State road 2204 leads through the village from Gleußen to Bad Staffelstein .

history

Herreth was first mentioned in the 9th century as "Herriden" in the traditions of the Fulda Abbey , which are based on a copy in the Codex Eberhardi from the 12th century. The next mention was in 1154, when Eberhard von Memmelsdorf gave the Büdenhof as a fief. At that time the place was subject to taxes to the Fulda monastery . Herreth was a Ganerbendorf , as there were three village lords with equal rights: the Banz monastery and the noble families Schaumberg and Altenstein . The von Altenstein was followed by the von Rotenhan and the von Schaumberg in 1640 by the Marschalk von Ostheim , in the 18th century by the von Könitz .

Herreth belonged to the parish of the original parish of Altenbanz for centuries . In 1491 a separate church, consecrated to Saint James , was mentioned for the first time. The Reformation was introduced in 1529. From 1585 on, a Protestant pastor lived in Herreth for the first time. The first half of the 17th century was marked by religious battles for the church and the parish of the place. However, the Bamberg and Würzburg bishops could not prevail. The Herrethers did not go to the Catholic masses, but attended the Protestant services in neighboring Gleußen. In 1725 the village nobility reinstated a Protestant pastor.

In the 1811 state treaty negotiated between Bavaria's Prime Minister Maximilian von Montgelas and Prince Leopold von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld , Herreth was awarded to Bavaria. In 1826, Duke Wilhelm in Bavaria acquired the two estates of the von Rotenhan and von Könitz families and thus also the patronage of the parish.

In 1863 the place name was changed from Kleinhereth to Herreth.

The innkeeper Andres Müller founded the later communal brewery in 1870. The community ran the brewery from 1912 to 1948. The brewery of the host Wilhelm Langguth brewed beer from 1870 to 1945. In 1863, the innkeeper Friedrich Geiger opened a brewery, which Fritz Stirnweiß acquired together with the inn at the end of the 1930s. Since then, the Stirnweiß family has been running the inn and the brewery.

In 1925 the village had 257 inhabitants, 6 of whom belonged to the Roman Catholic and 251 to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and 49 houses. In 1987 the village had 181 inhabitants and 53 houses with 58 apartments. Building areas in Mühläcker and Hutweide let the number of properties grow to 115 and the number of residents to 304 from 1993.

On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved and Herreth was incorporated into Kaltenbrunn . Since then, Herreth has been in the Coburg district . In the course of the Bavarian regional reform , Kaltenbrunn lost its independence as a municipality on May 1, 1978 and, like its districts, the parish village of Herreth and the hamlet of Merkendorf , became part of the municipality of Itzgrund. Kaltenbrunn became the seat of the municipal administration.

Parish Church of St. Jacobus Maior

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. Jacobus Maior is a choir tower from the 17th century with essentially late medieval remains. It stands walled on a hill on the outskirts of the village. The church tower, fitted with a new hood in 1669, was probably an early defense tower. Between 1692 and 1694 the nave was repaired and a two-storey gallery was installed .
