history

The place name "Altenbanke" was first mentioned around 800 in the traditions of the Fulda monastery , which are based on a copy in the Codex Eberhardi from the 12th century. Altenbanz was the center of the Banzgau, part of the Grabfeld, and the intersection of two old streets that led from Frankfurt am Main to Bohemia and from Erfurt via Hallstadt to Regensburg .

In the early Carolingian era, the place was owned by the Margraves of Schweinfurt from the 10th century and was part of the basic equipment of the Banz Benedictine monastery, which they founded in 1069 .

The Altenbanz parish was one of the original churches of the Würzburg diocese , which was founded in 742. A stone church was built around 800. The original parish , bordered by Main, Itz, Steinach and Rodach , encompassed the entire Banzgau with a south-west-north-east extension of about 30 kilometers. A pastor at Altenbanz is first recorded for 1149. The Banzgau was secularly assigned to the diocese of Bamberg and ecclesiastically to the diocese of Würzburg until 1807/1808.

In the Thirty Years' War Swedish troops destroyed Altenbanz. In 1801 the parish village comprised a parish church, a parsonage, a schoolhouse, a parish house with a turret, bell and clock, a shepherd's house, a community smithy, a bathing room, two taverns, 24 other houses with barns and a barren farmstead. The Banz monastery also had four courtyards, each with a house and barn. Centers and taxes belonged to the bishopric of Bamberg and the pastor belonged to the diocese of Würzburg.

A brewery already existed in Altenbanz in 1815 . In 1850 the Geuss family took over the business with an attached inn. In 1990 the brewing business was stopped.

In 1862 Altenbanz and its district of Zilgendorf were incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office of Staffelstein . In 1925 the rural community comprised an area of 483.12 hectares, 250 inhabitants, all but 4 of whom belonged to the Catholic Church, and 50 residential buildings. The responsible Protestant parish was in Herreth . In 1987 the parish village of Altenbanz had 202 inhabitants and 46 houses with 60 apartments.

On July 1, 1972, Altenbanz merged with the neighboring communities of Stadel , Nedensdorf , Unnersdorf and parts of Weingarten to form the new community of Banz , which was dissolved on January 1, 1978 and incorporated into the town of Staffelstein. Since then Altenbanz has been a district of Staffelstein.

On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved and Altenbanz was incorporated into the Lichtenfels district.
