Car Wars is a conflict simulation game published by Steve Jackson .

Players take control of one or more automobiles, which can include any type of vehicle such as motorcycles or trucks. Optional rules include helicopters, microplanes, balloons, boats, submarines, and tanks. The vehicles are usually equipped with weapons (machine guns, rocket launchers, etc.), souped-up components (high-performance wheels, nitro injectors, etc.) and defensive elements (armor). The players then lead their vehicles in battle within certain parameters.

In the released game, cardboard markers are used to represent vehicles in a simulated battle, but it is perfectly possible to use other vehicle models, such as toy cars, as placeholders in the game.

There are different scenarios, but you can also create your own.

Several six-sided dice are used to determine the results of gun fire, damage, and vehicle control throughout the game. The game is played in sections ( cycle ), each section represents one second of real time. Each section is divided into ten phases. The actions take place simultaneously. Each phase a vehicle moves a speed determined distance and weapons can be used as long as they have line of sight to a target of their choice. Usually a fight ends after a few segments that represent only a few seconds of game time. However, this can still mean several hours of fun.

Awards

Car Wars won the 1981 Charles S. Roberts Award for Best Science Fiction Board Game , which was presented as part of the Origins Awards at the time.
