Cardiff Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cardiff Railway was a railway company in South Wales .

On June 25, 1886, the Bute Docks Company was founded. The company operated several routes in the Bute Docks in Cardiff . The Taff Vale Railway (TVR) attempted to take over the Bude Docks Company in 1888. However, this failed. In 1896 the Bute Docks Company took over the Glamorganshire Canal and the Aberdare Canal . A merger with the Rhymney Railway failed. In 1897, the new headquarters of the company was built with the Pierhead Building on Cardiff Bay .

On August 6, 1897, the company changed its name to Cardiff Railway. The company had the right to build several lines to the port of Cardiff. However, only the 10.5 kilometer long railway line from Cardiff to Pontypridd was built , as competition from TVR prevented further expansion. The line was put into operation on May 15, 1909 for freight traffic and on March 1, 1911 for passenger traffic.

On January 1, 1922, the Great Western Railway took over the company.
