Pierhead Building
The Pierhead Building (also called The Pierhead for short , Welsh Adeilad y Pierhead ) is a building in the Welsh capital Cardiff . It was built in a neo-Gothic style in 1897 and now serves as one of the main offices of the Welsh Parliament .
The listed building is a symbol of the city and is also known as "Welsh Big Ben " due to its similarity to the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London .
location
The Pierhead Building is located directly on Cardiff Bay, about 40 meters from the bank of the Bristol Channel . In the immediate vicinity are the Senedd (the Welsh Parliament building), the cultural center Wales Millennium Center (seat of the Welsh National Opera ) and T Standort Hywel, another location of the National Assembly.
history
The building was built in 1897 according to plans by the Welsh architect William Frame (1848-1906), who had previously been involved in the renovation of Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch . It initially served as the headquarters of the Bute Docks Company , which was renamed the Cardiff Railway Company in the year it was built. The facade is made of glazed red terracotta , which comes from Ruabon near Wrexham in northern Wales . For a long time Ruabon was known as a stronghold of terracotta production.
On March 1, 2010, the Pierhead Building opened to the public as a museum dedicated to the history of the building and the National Assembly; the building is also used as an event center. The first project after the reopening was the Pierhead Sessions , a series of events, discussions and lectures on various topics that were held from March 4th to 6th.
