Careware (or also charityware , helpware , goodware ) is software that is licensed in such a way that distribution serves a good cause .
Careware is often distributed for free, with the author asking the user to donate money to a specific good cause . For example, the text editor Vim is free software . The author Bram Moolenaar , however, asks the user to donate money to the organization "ICCF Holland", the resulting AIDS - orphans in Uganda helps. In the case of commercial careware, the purchase price includes a fee for a good cause.
The software author Paul Lutus does not understand the concept of Careware as a financial exchange, but as a request that the users of his Arachnophilia editor should live more consciously and positively for a short period of time.
