Carl-August-Werk

The Carl-August-Werk was a historical research project that was founded by the state government in 1912/13 to mark the centenary of the founding of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach in 1915. It was intended to commemorate Karl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach , the employer and friend of Goethe . The historian Erich Marcks was initially appointed director. Because of the First World War , the company came to a standstill. Willy Andreas took over the management on behalf of the Thuringian Historical Commission and awarded several research contracts. From 1932 the National Socialist Ministry of Education in Thuringia carried out the project with the support of Gauleiter Fritz Sauckel in order to present the work of Karl August as a forerunner of his own political goals. Central projects were the correspondence between Karl August and Goethe with political content. A comprehensive scientific biography of Karl August should crown the project. The historians Fritz Hartung and Ulrich Crämer , who was replaced by Hans Tümmler in 1939 , did the preliminary work . Some of the publications did not take place until the 1950s.
