Carl Louis Klawitter

Carl Louis Klawitter (born June 19, 1869 Bremen ; † May 24, 1953 there ) was a German bookseller and politician ( SPD ).

biography

Klawitter learned the profession of engraver .

He joined the SPD early on. After his military service in the Imperial Navy , in 1894 he became managing director of a newly founded bookstore of the SPD Bremen . He was also particularly active in educational work. At times he also worked in the editorial office of the SPD party newspaper. In 1897 he took over the management of the party's library. In 1908 he merged the various trade union libraries to form a central workers library in Bremen. In 1901 he founded a workers' association to combat alcohol abuse.

In 1902 Klawitter was elected for the SPD as a representative of the 4th  grade in the Bremen citizenship and he was a member of parliament until 1918. Politically, he advocated the implementation of the class struggle and spoke out against the admission of academics to the party. In 1916 he joined the left USPD . He took on various offices and tasks in the USPD. In 1921 his political work in the USPD ended when the vote fell sharply.

His extensive private library was acquired by the Institute for Marxism-Leninism at the Central Committee of the SED in Berlin after his death . He was buried in the Waller Friedhof (grave location WBP II 108).

Honors

  • The Klawitterstraße in Bremen-Arsten was named after him in 1964.
