Carl Ostendarp (born 1961 in Amherst (Massachusetts) ) is an American painter .

Life

Carl Ostendarp earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University and his master's degree from Yale University. He had lived in New York since the 1980s and had his first solo exhibitions here. In 1992, Rolf Ricke showed Carl Ostendarp in the group exhibition Kinder! Macht Neues! in his gallery in Cologne. Carl Ostendarp exhibited several times in the Rolf Ricke gallery and is now represented by the Anke Schmidt gallery in Cologne.

Carl Ostendarp's painting can be understood within the context of American post-war painting. The highly abstracted and monochrome surfaces can be understood as borrowing from the tradition of color field painting . The recognizable motifs and text elements borrow from the cartoon graphics. Formally, the work of Carl Ostendarp moves between abstraction, color field painting and pop art. The onomatopoeic words can be understood as a reference to the comic painting by Roy Lichtenstein . In formal terms, Ostendarp also resorts to minimal art, such as the paintings by Nicholas Krushenick or the paintings by Edward Avedisian from the 1960s.

Carl Ostendarp teaches at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
