Carl Gottlieb Little ( Russian Карл Богданович Вениг * February 14 jul. / 26. February  1830 greg. In Reval (now Tallinn ), † January 24 jul. / 6. February  1908 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian painter and educator of German descent.

Life

Carl Wenig was the son of the music teacher, organist and violinist at the Protestant Nikolaikirche in Reval Gottlieb Friedrich Wenig and Agathe Emilie Fabergé, aunt of the jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé . His younger brother Johann Gottlieb Wenig (Russian Богда́н Богда́нович Ве́ниг, 1837–1872) was also a painter.

He studied painting at the Petersburg Art Academy at the chair for historical painting under Fyodor Bruni . In 1853 he was awarded a gold medal for his picture " Ester before Artaxerxes " and was able to continue his studies in Rome . In 1862 the painting "The Angels Announce the Fall of the City of Sodom" brought him an appointment as professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art. From 1862 to 1894 he was a professor at the Petersburg Art Academy. He mainly painted genre scenes, portraits and pictures of historical, biblical and mythological content.
