Carlo Carafa (preacher)

Carlo Carafa (* 1561 ; † 1633 ), Italian soldier and priest, came from the noble Carafa family and was Duke of Andria and Count of Ruvo until his conversion . After a dissolute youth, he was converted to a celibate life through the singing of a nun and from then on devoted himself to the rescue and support of prostitutes. The Sicilian courtesan Katharina Valenta, whom he had converted, helped him . He founded several “Pentite” and “Illuminate” , houses in which repentant prostitutes could find admission and help. In 1600 Carafa founded one of the forerunners of the Pii Operai Catechisti Rurali , the Congregatione Piorum Operatum .
