Carlo Manzoni

Carlo Manzoni (born April 16, 1909 in Milan , † May 16, 1975 in Milan) was an Italian painter and writer .

Life

Manzoni first studied medicine, then architecture and painting in evening classes at various universities and was active in the futurism movement. After he had already made a name for himself as a painter, he began to write in 1936, first satirical and humorous articles for newspapers and magazines, and later also plays for theater and television.

He is co-founder of the satirical magazine Bertoldo , of which Giovanni Guareschi was editor-in-chief from 1936 to 1943 .

Manzoni, who had also worked as a gagman for films for many years, wrote and directed the comedy Ha fatto 13! .

At the end of the 1960s, Manzoni became known outside his home country for his super thrillers , a series of humorous detective novels in which he parodied this literary genre by moderately exaggerating or interspersing the stereotypes familiar from detective novels with witty elements. Manzoni's protagonists are the private detectives Chico Pipa and Gregorio Scarta. Gregorio Scarta is a four-legged colleague, a former police dog who has not forgotten his craft and like Chico Pipa is in top form when the tank is filled with enough bourbon whiskey. As an undercover agent, Scarta is unbeatable.

Signor Veneranda is a modern Socrates who takes his fellow human beings literally, entangles them in tricky conversations and thereby sometimes conjures up bizarre situations.
