Carlo Poma
Carlo Poma (born December 7, 1823 in Mantua , † December 7, 1852 in Belfiore near Mantua ) was an Italian doctor and freedom fighter.
Life
After attending school in Mantua Carlo Poma studied medicine at the University in Pavia . After graduation, he returned to his hometown where he worked at the local hospital . In the course of time he became a supporter of Giuseppe Mazzini's ideas . He joined the Liberation Committee founded by the priest Enrico Tazzoli in Mantua, which advocated an end to Austrian rule in northern Italy. Carlo Poma's house served the underground committee as a repository for leaflets and revolutionary writings. When the Austrian police discovered these documents during a house search , Poma was arrested in June 1852. The Austrians also found a list of members of the Liberation Committee, which resulted in further arrests .
Carlo Poma was sentenced to death by hanging in November 1852. He was executed together with the founder of the committee, Enrico Tazzoli , and three other members on December 7, 1852 in the fortress of Belfiore near Mantua. Because of his tragic death, Carlo Poma is considered one of the most important figures in the Italian unification movement .
