Carlos Malcolm (composer)

Carlos Malcolm (born November 24, 1945 in Havana ) is a Cuban composer and pianist .

Malcolm had his first piano lessons with Juana María Quiñones and Sonia Montalvo. From 1962 he was a student of Alicia Perea and Federico Smith at the Escuela Nacional de Música . He continued his training with Amadeo Roldán and Margot Rojas Mendoza at the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán and graduated in 1981 from the Instituto Superior de Arte .

He then worked as a pianist and composer for the Conjunto Nacional de Danza Moderna and the Instituto Cubano de Radio y Televisión as well as for a dance formation in Ecuador. He performed his own compositions on concert tours to Mexico (1979 and 1981), Jamaica (1980) and Canada (1986). In the autumn of 1985 in Warsaw he took part with the composition Quetzalcóatl for flute and piano. During further stays in Warsaw between 1987 and 1989 he met Iannis Xenakis , who had a noticeable influence on his compositional style. Malcolm has lived in Poland since 1990, where he completed his musical education at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music . He has been a member of the Polish Composers Association since 2013.
