Carmen Castillo Echeverría (born May 21, 1945 in Santiago de Chile , Chile ) is a Chilean documentary filmmaker and screenwriter who has French citizenship.

Life

Castillo is the daughter of the Chilean politician and architect Fernando Castillo Velasco and the writer Mónica Echeverría. She was a professor of historical research at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile . During the reign of President Salvador Allende , she worked in La Moneda, the seat of government in Santiago de Chile. After the coup in Chile in 1973 , she worked with her compañero Miguel Enríquez , the head of the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR) against the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet . From December 1973, the two lived with two children from different connections on Calle Santa Fe in the San Miguel district of Santiago de Chile. In October 1974, forces of the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA) secret police attacked the hiding place, killing Enriquez and wounding Carmen Castillo.

Castillo was expelled to Argentina in November 1974 under international pressure and then went to France. She decided to stay in France after having published two books there and started making documentaries since the 1980s. Today she commutes between France and Chile.
