Carn Gwavel
Carn Gwavel is a Fogou on Peninnis Head, southeast of Hugh Town on St Mary’s , an island in the Isles of Scilly in Cornwall in England . In the case of these basements, a basic distinction is made between "rock-cut", "earth-cut", "stone built" and "mixed" basements.
The subterranean Fogou was only discovered in 2000 when part of the roof of the main corridor collapsed. It is intact apart from some minor damage in the main aisle and the side crawl space (the actual entrance). The Fogou is quite small for the type of monument and it is dangerous to walk. It is on private land and cannot be viewed without permission from the landowner.
The existence of a Fogou on the Scillys is a not unexpected extension of the distribution of this type of monument.
