Carol Chomsky (born July 1, 1930 in Philadelphia , † December 19, 2008 in Lexington ) was an American linguist whose work was dedicated to the language acquisition of children.

Life

Carol Chomsky was born Carol Doris Schatz on July 1, 1930 in Philadelphia . In 1949 she married the current linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky , whom she had known from early childhood. She received her bachelor's degree in French from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 . In 1953 Chomsky moved with her husband to Hasorea , a kibbutz in Israel , which they left after a short time. In 1968, Chomsky received a PhD in Linguistics from Harvard University .

Chomsky's most famous work today is The Acquisition of Syntax in Children From 5 to 10 , which appeared in 1969. In the context of this book, Chomsky examined how children’s understanding of the grammatical structure of their mother tongue develops and how children use the skills acquired in the process to interpret more complex sentences. The earlier view that children had fully learned the syntax of their mother tongue by the age of five has been refuted by Chomsky's work. Her research showed that children continue to develop their skills in understanding complex sentence constructions after the age of five.

As part of her research, Chomsky developed a method called repeated reading , which should help children learn to read fluently. In this method, a child reads a passage of text silently while a spoken recording of the same passage is played in the background. The child repeats this process until they can read the text passage fluently at the speed of the recording. Research has shown that repeating just four times improved reading for most children.

From 1972 to 1997 Chomsky worked on a faculty at Harvard University.

At the age of 78, Chomsky died of cancer .
