The Carolina Hayride was an American country show broadcast by WBT of Charlotte , North Carolina .

history

The Carolina Hayride was first broadcast in 1945. It was preceded by the Crazy Barn Dance between 1934 and the late 1930s and the Dixie Jamboree during the Second World War . The show was hosted by Grady Cole and Claude Casey , both of whom had years of experience on the radio. The WBT Briarhoppers , a bluegrass band from the area and regular artists on WBT, provided the house band for the show.

The Carolina Hayrides ensemble mainly consisted of traditional bluegrass musicians, which made the show particularly popular with the rural North Carolinian audience, as it included less urban, modern country styles and more traditional sounds. Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith , who had a big hit with Guitar Boogie in 1948 , starred on the show and appeared in other WBT programs. In addition to Smith, the Swanee River Boys, Fiddlin 'Hank, Claude Casey, the Johnson Family Singers and other musicians could be heard and seen in the Hayride.

Starting in 1946, the Carolina Hayride was broadcast on the Columbia Broadcasting System , known to a wider audience and also popularly known as Carolina Calling . The show's popularity grew steadily and it developed into one of the more successful shows of its type. The show continued to air until the 1950s, but was then canceled.
