The Nike Swoosh

Carolyn Davidson (* 1943 ) is an American graphic designer and the developer of the Nike Swoosh logo .

Life

While studying graphic design at Portland State University in 1971, Nike founder Phil Knight commissioned her to create a sign for a sports shoe. Knight, who was an accounting lecturer at the university at the time, asked her to create "a stripe or logo" that would exude speed and movement. From a series of proposals, Knight selected the one who portrays the wings of the Greek goddess of victory Nike .

Davidson received $ 35 for her design at the time and continued to work for Nike.

After Nike had successfully established itself in the market, Davidson was invited by Phil Knight in 1983. At that meeting, she received a gold Swoosh ring with a diamond, a certificate, and 500 shares of Nike, which at the time had an estimated market value of $ 150 and later, as Davidson has not sold any shares, worth $ 643,035 were (as of 2011). After a total of 6 stock splits at a ratio of 2: 1 since 1990, the 500 shares have become 32,000 shares valued at around US $ 2.4 million (as of 2018, price US $ 75).

After 29 years in the design industry, Carolyn Davidson retired from her job. She has two children and lives in Portland, Oregon.
